Software is general term is used to explain a collection of computer programs, procedures and documentation that perform some task on a computer system.  The terms contain application software such as word processors that perform productive tasks for users.  Other system software such as operating systems interface with hardware to provide the necessary services for application software. Overall, a computer needs software to perform the desired tasks and functions an individual, company, organization, or business desires.

In computers, software is loaded into RAM and performs in the central processing unit.  At low level, software interprets in machine language specific to a single processor.  Machine language is made of groups of binary values signifying processor instructions, in many ways change the state of the computer from its previous state.  Software then translates this binary code and produces the images, text, and functions users see and experience on the monitor of their computer.

Software is divided into three major categories.  There are system software, programming software and application software.  System software aids computer hardware and computer systems to function.  It contains operation systems, diagnostic tools, device drivers, servers, windowing systems, utilities, and others hardware add-ons.  The main reason of system software is insulate the application programmers.  Programming software provides tools to help programmers in writing program and software utilize different programming languages in a more suitable way.  These tools include text editors, linkers, interpreters, debuggers, templates, and other shortcuts for the most basic to the highly advanced programmers.  Application software let the end users to achieve one or more specific tasks.  These applications include business application, educational application, medical application, computer games, and many more.  In such a small hardware device, software allows a mountain of processes to occur efficiently and rather quickly.

Without software, the most basic computer functions could not occur.  In the same sense, complex functions, records, data recordings, data collection, word processing, text adjustment, applications development, and programming could not occur without a huge host of various software applications.  In using these applications, staying current with industry trends and updates allows users to stay on the top of their field as well as keeps them compatible with others including associates, clients, and other workers. With the right software, all the computers in the world are capable of communicating with one another is a manner that is understandable to both the software, hardware, and individual users.
